TACLOBAN CITY — A P7.08-billion wind power plant project is set to rise in Victoria town of Northern Samar next year.

Amid the current fuel crisis and energy emergency plaguing the country, energy authorities described this new major clean energy project as one that reinforces the province’s position as an emerging renewable energy hub in Eastern Visayas.

Project proponent, Econergy Renewable Power Philippines Inc. (ERPPI) officials met with Governor Harris Ongchuan last week and presented updates on the project, while reaffirming their commitment to pursue the wind energy development in partnership with the provincial government.

The planned facility will have 24 large-scale wind turbines installed in elevated areas of Victoria, with a projected capacity of around 100 megawatts to 105 megawatts.

The project is aligned with the Northern Samar government’s Green Energy Auction Program, which is also projected to add significant capacity to the region’s renewable energy supply.

According to the Provincial Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office (PED-IPO), if all requirements are completed on schedule, construction may begin next year and take about two to three years to complete. Full-blown operations are targeted in 2029.

The provincial government further said that, aside from power generation, the project includes community-oriented components.

Meteorological masts to be installed for wind resource measurement will later be turned over to the local government after two years of operation.

These components would be repurposed for disaster risk reduction and climate monitoring—an important function for a province frequently exposed to extreme weather events, province officials said. —Miriam G. Desacada
