Tacloban City–The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) launched the Junior FARMC Champions: Empowering Young Information Officers for Sustainable Fisheries Management in Padre Burgos, Southern Leyte on December 2-3, 2025. Over 30 Grade 5 and 6 learners from Tangkaan Elementary School learned about fisheries conservation and the role of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Councils (FARMCs) in local governance.
The learners participated in activities on sustainable fisheries management, coastal and marine resource management, and basic communication. They also created IEC materials and learned about financial management through the Fish N’ Learn game.
“Kalambuan sa Kadagatan, Kabataan atong Kauban; sa Junior FARMC ta Sugdan” (Together with the youth, we build a thriving ocean—starting with the Junior FARMC) was the theme of the event.
BFAR 8 OIC Regional Director Dominador G. Maputol emphasized the importance of the youth as resource users and caretakers of the sea. The initiative aims to develop future Junior FARMCs and IOs in Eastern Visayas, with plans to expand to other provinces in 2026.
