by Miriam G.Desacada Tacloban City- The Department of Tourism here have launched the Outstanding Eastern Visayans Awards (OEVA) to recognize individuals who’ve shaped Eastern Visayas’ development, culture, and identity. “Through the OEVA, we want to recognize the individuals behind our region’sprogress–those whose work has brought pride to the Eastern Visayas,” said DOT Regional Director Karina Rosa S. Tiopes, CESO III. “Beyond individual recognition, this initiative aims to promote our region’s achievements and effectively change the perspectiveofthosewhoonlyviewusthroughthelensofourcalamities,” she added. The initiative is supported by Tingog Sinirangan, demonstrating a shared commitment to promoting inclusive regional growth and supporting nation-building. Tingog Sinirangan emphasized that recognizing outstanding Eastern Visayans is essential for inspiring greater civic engagement, strengthening community leadership, and celebrating the people driving progress across Eastern Visayas. Aligned with this shared vision, the awards span ten sectors, including public service and governance, entrepreneurship and innovation, science and technology, education, arts and cultural heritage, environmental advocacy, health, media and communication, faith and philanthropy, and youth leadership, highlighting the diverse contributions shaping Eastern Visayas. Nominations are open to individuals from Eastern Visayas or those who have provided significant and documented service to the region. Submissions may be made by organizations and industry peers, including endorsed self-nominations. Late or incomplete entries will be automatically disqualified, and submissions will be accepted only until May 15, 2026. All entries will undergo a clear, merit-based process to ensure transparency, credibility, and fairness. This includes eligibility screening, independent validation by an external panel, and assessment by a credible judging panel. Shortlisted nominees will then move on to formal interviews prior to the final decision. “Through this transparent process, we aim to ensure that those recognized truly reflect the highest standards of excellence and meaningful contribution in Eastern Visayas,” Regional Director Tiopes said. The initiative also aims to inspire more people to contribute to their communitiesandbepartof the region’s continued progress. In this regard, the public is encouraged to take part by submitting entries and helping bring forward individuals making a difference in the region.
